How are 15-year-olds doing? Pisalytics shows the results of the OECD’s PISA surveys in mathematics, reading and science from 2000 to today, for around 100 countries and economies, and for girls and boys, students with and without an immigrant background, and students from different socio-economic backgrounds.
Mathematics results have fallen sharply since 2018

Across the 23 OECD countries with comparable results in every round, the average mathematics score stayed between 496 and 502 from 2003 to 2018. By 2025 it had fallen to 469, 27 points below 2018. The share of students below the baseline level rose from 21% to 32%.
Sweden’s mathematics score fell from 509 in 2003 to 478 in 2012, recovered to 502 in 2018, and stood at 464 in 2025. Compare with the other Nordic countries and the OECD average.
In PISA 2025, girls scored significantly higher than boys in reading in 86 of 89 countries and economies, and boys in one. Across the 23 OECD countries the gap is 31 points. Mathematics goes the other way: there boys are 12 points ahead.
Across the 23 OECD countries, students in the most socio-economically advantaged quarter score between 83 and 95 points higher in mathematics than those in the least advantaged quarter, in every round from 2003 to 2022.
